Did you know you can donate blood every 8 weeks?

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
- Winston Churchill

I attended another blood drive this afternoon.  It is nice to give with out an expectation of getting something in return.  This is another easy way to make a difference and you can save a life.  I was able to complete the process within my lunch hour, ate some cookies, and headed back to work.

Quick facts:

  • If there are 100 people in a room, 46 will have type O blood, 40 will have type A, 10 will have type B and four will have type AB
  • Three teaspoons of blood can save a baby's life
  • One donation has the potential to save as many as three lives
  • If 50 people donate, they could provide enough blood to take care of victims of a major car accident
  • If 20 people donate, they could help one burn victim
  • Whole blood donors can give every eight weeks
  • Today, fewer than four of every ten people in the U.S. are eligible to give blood. Fewer than one in ten actually donate
  • Approximately one out of every seven people entering the hospital needs blood
  • Plasma donors can give as often as every three days
  • Blood lasts only 42 days
  • Platelets last only five days
  • Approximately 40,000 pints of blood are used each day in the United States
Please consider donating blood, joining the bone marrow registry, or hosting a blood drive.

MICROVOLUNTEERISM! Volunteer any time or day via at home or on your smart phones!

Do you love your community but just don't have time to volunteer?

If so, don't feel bad.  We are all busy with our careers and our families and somehow trying to manage a social life.

Lately, I have been trying to find ways to make an impact on the community, without making such a huge impact on my time at home with my family and I found it!

"MICROVOLUNTEERISM"

In case you haven't heard about it yet, "microvolunteerism" consists of brief, low commitment volunteer actions.  These actions could be as easy as "liking" a website on facebook, to posting a quick idea on a blog, providing feedback on a website or writing a short story...there are a million possibilities.  Please check out this website and try it for yourself.  If you are already on social networking sites like facebook, twitter, etc, then you can do this too.

An impact is an impact...great or small.

Week 29: Upcoming Events and Volunteer Resource

29 weeks!!  Thank you everyone for your support of this project!

The Joys of Volunteering

Since I have been busy the past few weeks working with the Sacramento Police Mounted Assocation and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention on upcoming events, I don't have any new volunteer activities to share.  I can tell you, though, that the events I AM working on are worth the extra effort :)

One of my favorite things about working with different non-profits in the community is the variety of skills, experience and creativity that I get to use.  It never gets boring.  So, the past few weeks have been a multi-taskers dream.  Volunteering offers something different for everyone.

Upcoming Events

SPMA "5-0 Showdeo"

Currently, I am securing our lunch donations for the foster kids that will be coming out for their own special experience of the 5-0 Show-deo.  I have been in discussion with local businesses and vendors for raffle items, as well as, coordinating collections sites for the clothing drive for the Sacramento Children's Receiving Home.  We will be collecting clothing, shoes and toiletries at different sites around the Sacramento area, which will be presented to the Receiving Home at the rodeo.

I am still looking for the following for the 5-0 Show-deo:
  • Volunteers to help at the event
  • Raffle Items
  • Lunch Donation for 75 foster children - in the past Chick fil-A had brought out kids meals and chicken sandwiches.  We would like to do something similar this time around.
AFSP Out of the Darkness Walk

While I have been plenty busy with the rodeo, I also have commitments as the sponsorship coordinator for the AFSP Out of the Darkness Walk in October.  Between my regular job and being a mother of 5, I have been squeezing in follow up calls to local corporations to confirm sponsorships for the walk.  It is a good networking opportunity and fullfills some of my need to talk incessantly.  If you think your organization would be willing to sponsor this event, please let me know.  Also, please visit the website to register for the walk.

Volunteer Resources

If you are interested in other volunteer opportunities, please take a few minutes to visit one of my favorite local volunteer resources, The Volunteer Center of Sacramento.  There are endless volunteer opportunities posted there for all ages and interests:
