Those who know me, know that I have had some very personal experience with the dependency court and the foster care systems. For those who don't, I would like to share a brief version of my story and how you can help support my mission...
Last year, after a LONG process, I was able to gain guardianship of a family member through the local dependency court. The process took years and was an extremely trying time for my family. We were in and out of court almost every week, had weekly visits from social workers and had to undergo intense screening and interview processes. When it was all said and done, I was exhausted and relieved that we could move on with our lives. I also realized that there are many, many children in the foster care system that are not as fortunate as our niece was to have family to fight for them.
I thought back to the time when we found out that she had been taken into protective custody and, then, placed with a foster family. We were only able to talk to her once she was settled into their home. My niece was 3 years old. When we would talk to her on the phone, she was scared and wanted to go home. I had to plead with the social workers and the judge to let her stay with me, because she was so upset, she hadn't eaten in days and cried non-stop. The court agreed and she was transported to my home (beginning our long process to guardianship). I talked with her about her experience and she said that the foster family was nice. THANKFULLY. We also talked about her time at the Children's Receiving Home. I can't imagine how scared she was to be in a strange place, with none of her own belongings and to be surrounded by unfamiliar faces. It was at this moment that I felt like I needed to do SOMETHING to help those kids that were going through the same thing.
In 2010, my husband and I organized a private skateboard camp, here in Sacramento. We hosted 35 children from the Children's Receiving Home. We fed them lunch. They watched a live skateboard demo by some of our local skateboard teams, who then, gave them lessons. Thanks to our sponsors, EVERY child went home with their very own complete skateboard and a ton of prizes. We had kids as young as 5 and some as old as 17. The smiles on their faces as the loaded up on the bus at the end of the day were priceless. That same afternoon, we opened the doors to the skatepark for a public event, which included skateboard demos, live music, live art and a raffle. The proceeds went back to the Children's Receiving Home. It was THE MOST rewarding experience I have ever had.
THAT BRINGS ME TO THE "FIVE-O SHOWDEO"...
I have been talking about this event for months. It is the same concept, only in a different format. This time, the event is being hosted by the Sacramento Police Mounted Association. We are bringing in up to 75 children from the Children's Receiving Home for a private show-rodeo. We will provide lunch. They will get to meet and greet with the horses, watch live demonstrations and participate in some fun activities. It is just our way of giving these kids a day to be a kid.
Later in the day, we will open up to the public for the "Five-O Showdeo". See attached flyer. During the show, we will be presenting the Children's Receiving Home with donations of clothing and hygiene products we have collected at different sites throughout Sacramento, this month.
Your support of this event means a lot to me and to my family. Thank you to all of those who have volunteered, donated or purchased tickets.

MILESTONE: 52Weeks1Difference Blog hits 1000 views
I just wanted to say a GIGANTIC THANK YOU to all of the people who have taken time out of their busy days to visit my blog and see what I have been up to. This project started 35 weeks ago as a personal mission to make a positive impact on the world around me. I reached a milestone today, when my blog hit 1000 page views! In the grand scheme of cute kitten videos on youtube, 1000 might not seem like a lot. But to me...1000 views means that, in addition to the 35 volunteer activities I have done over the year, the organizations I have impacted, the families I have impacted and the comunities I impacted, MY MESSAGE HAS BEEN SHARED 1000 TIMES. So...when I look at all of the negative things taking place around me, I don't feel hopeless. I feel the opposite. To reach 1000 views, people had to care enough to take a look. I hope you were inspired. I hope that you, yourself, will find a place in the community to give back and make a difference, whether BIG or SMALL. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Week 33: Birthday Magic
I just wrapped my 33rd week of 52 Weeks 1 Difference. Most of my volunteer time was spent wrapping up final details for the upcoming SPMA "Five-O Showdeo". However, I was able to squeeze in a little time for shopping. That is right...I said shopping and it was for a good cause. I was on a mission for "Birthday Magic". Birthday Magic is a program, run by the Volunteer Center of Sacramento, which provides birthday celebrations for children in local shelters. Without this program, there would be many children that went without a birthday celebration at all. This weekend I was purchasing birthday presents for a young girl in the shelter. Her requests weren't extravagant...she just wanted a new pair of shoes, a sweatshirt and some posters, etc. I will be wrapping gifts tonight and delivering to the shelter tomorrow.
See below for more details on the program and how you can get involved:

BirthdayMAGIC is a program of the Volunteer Center of Sacramento, which provides personalized monthly birthday parties to children currently living in Sacramento area homeless shelters, transitional living facilities, community programs or residential treatment centers.
The goal of BirthdayMAGIC is to brighten the lives of children by providing fun, meaningful and memorable birthday parties during what can be an awkward and challenging experience in their lives.
Each month, children living in these shelters will celebrate birthdays – through financial support, volunteer help and the BirthdayMAGIC program, these wonderful children will receive a birthday party thrown in their honor.
For more information on sponsoring a party please contact Christine Wallace at cwallace@volunteersac.org or call (916) 567-3100 ext. 106.
“We had so much fun at the party last Thursday. It was an amazing experience.” – Tamra D.
” My daughter and I had a blast at the party. She said to me on the way home, “I’m so glad that we came as it made me feel so much better about being able to help others!” You don’t know how much it meant to her! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to do so. ” -Marilyn P.
“I had a fantastic time last Thursday! Thank you for all your hard work, creativity and opportunities you give us!” – Kathe H.M.

Time Magazine Reissue of Mother Teresa Special Edition
-Mother Teresa
Time Magazine just reissued their Mother Teresa Special Edition. I am so glad they did. She has been on my mind lately and I had downloaded her auto-biography last week. There isn't a single more inspiring person, as far as I am concerned. I wish I could be as sacrificial in my service as she was. Perhaps if I didn't have 5 kids to look after. However, if I can make even a small impact in my life, then I will attribute a portion of it to the inspiration of this woman. I am looking forward to spending the evening reading through this brief look at her life. I hope some of you get a chance to pick up a copy as well.
