Hayden's story, according to his family...

"In November of 2011, Hayden Elliott, our 11 year old son/brother/granchild/nephew/cousin was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a very aggressive form of bone cancer. An MRI revealed that Hayden has a tumor wrapped around his shin bone. Though the cancer has not spread to the lungs thankfully, it has invaded the marrow. However, time is of critical importance, as we race to stay ahead of the cancer before it has a chance to spread.  Currently he is undergoing chemotherapy, which he will have to endure at least twelve rounds of over many months. As you can imagine, this is so much for a anyone to go through, let alone an 11 year old boy. No child should ever have to hear the diagnosis or even word “cancer”, but Hayden not only had to hear it, but is now in the fight for his life to beat this disease. He has already endured days of sickness as a result of the treatment, and is losing all his hair. And he is facing months and months of this. What is truly so difficult for Hayden is that he is missing out on all of the things he loves the most - playing football, basketball, riding bikes, and swimming. He is an athletic child who derives so much happiness from playing sports, and this has been taken away from him. Everything in his whole life changed in an instant. At this moment, our whole family is taking it one step at a time. Our top priority is to keep Hayden comfortable. We sleep in shifts at the hospital so he is never alone, we rub his back, collect urine, change bedding to get all the fallen hair that is constantly making him itch – anything to help him, in any way we can. As Hayden continues his treatment in the coming months, his medical bills will start mounting substantially. Besides the chemotherapy, he will need surgery, and then months of rehabilitative care. His medical costs soar as each day passes, and it’s a lot for one family to take on. Insurance does cover some of these bills but not all of it. In effort to raise money we are doing a fundraiser in April. We understand no eveyone will be able to attend so have decided to create this account for those who want to send dontaions. TOMORROW! Walk to Remember Bryan Hall at Elk Grove Park

If you don't have plans tomorrow morning and you want to get out and enjoy the weather, meet us out at Elk Grove Regional Park for the Walk to Remember Bryan Hall.

On April 10, 2009 five American soldiers were killed in combat in Mosul, Iraq. SFC Bryan E. Hall, of Elk Grove, is one of those soldiers whose heroic actions saved the lives of his fellow soldiers and Iraq civilians. This walk honors SFC Hall and the other four soldiers killed in the confrontation and all American Soldiers, past and present, who serve our country. All proceeds from the walk will be split between the Bryan E. Hall Memorial Scholarship and an education fund established for SFC Hall's five-year old daughter, Addison.

Please bring your family and join us on Saturday, April 14, 2012 for a patriotic 5K (3.1 miles) walk in Elk Grove Regional Park. Check-in begins at 9:00 a.m. - refreshments will be served. The opening ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. and concludes with a delicious lunch provided by Outback Steakhouse.

Advance registration is $25.00 per person; $75.00 for families of four to six members; $150.00 for groups of 10. Walk-in registration is $30 per person; $85 for families; groups of 10 are $175.

Children 5 and under are free.

Week 13 Recap: 1st Annual - Sacramento Mounted Police Fundraiser

Kicking off the Month of April, I spent this past Saturday with Sacramento Police Mounted Association at the First Annual - Horse Power Fundraiser BBQ.  I feel very priveleged to have spent the day with such a great group of people.  The weather was PERFECT.  This was a family friendly BBQ, which included a petting zoo, pony rides, horse drawn carriage rides, delicious bbq, the DART team and even cupcakes.  Can't wait til next year!  The Sacramento Police Mounted Association is still trying to meet their goal of $25,000 by July 2012.  If you are interested in making a donation, please visit their website at http://www.sacmounted.org/

Since 1998 Sacramento Police Department has had a full time Mounted Unit.  They perform a variety of safety and outreach functions.  Horses have always been a large part of life in Sacramento.  The Sacramento Police Mounted Association has been established to help preserve this important tool.

Spring is here (although it finally feels like winter).  Along with warmer weather comes the season for fundraising walks, barbeques, and more.  April is going to be a busy volunteer month!

Saturday, April 7th - "Horse Power Fundraiser Barbeque"benefiting Sacramento Police Mounted Association

This will be a day of barbeque, horse carriage rides, a petting zoo and family fun.

The city’s shortfall of tens of millions of dollars meant big cuts and even job losses. With money being frighteningly scarce, the Sacramento Police Department had to make some tough decisions and the Mounted Patrol unit was in jeopardy. The mounted unit was spared during large layoffs in 2011.  The Sacramento Police Mounted Association (SPMA) has stepped in to assist.  SPMA recognizes the police department has been gracious in encouraging the Mounted unit to prevail.  Sac PD has one of the few full time mounted units.  We also strongly believe that a society with horses is a better community.  These majestic animals bring Officers and Citizens together in a way that is inexplicable.

The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.  Your participation helps March for Babies support research and programs that help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin health lives.  And they will be used to bring comfort and information to families with a baby in newborn intensive care.

This Weekend - Shamrock'n 1/2 Marathon to benefit "Project FIT"

A Non-Profit Youth Fitness Initiative

Project Fit is a free after school running program that encourages youth fitness offered by Fleet Feet Sports Sacramento. Provided at no charge to any Sacramento elementary school, Fleet Feet Sports provides the training materials, program details, and a coaching session to parent or school volunteers who lead the program. Additional support is offered to Title One, low income schools, to include free race entries to local races for children and a coaching stipend for coach volunteers.
Young children are not getting the amount of exercise they require to keep their bodies and minds sharp and in shape. Schools have reduced physical education programs and recess times, and the allure of screen games and television is allowing our kids to develop sedentary lifestyles. This is a leading problem in increased childhood obesity and the development of diabetes.
Jan and Pat Sweeney, owners of Fleet Feet Sports Sacramento, have been supporting local elementary schools with free after-school running programs for several years. Having seen the amazing accomplishments of the children in these programs, the Sweeney's launched Project Fit in 2010 which now has over 750 students participating in 15 Sacramento schools.
By participating in Shamrock'n you are making a difference. Shamrock'n proceeds help underwrite Project Fit shirts for kids in the program, race entries for these kids during the 2012 running season and "Track In A Box" kits for the running coaches. These kits have running supplies that make running even more fun for the kids. Thank you for running the 2012 Shamrock'n Half Marathon and making a difference to the children in Project Fit.
